Be As Happy As You Want To Be

THE WORLD is rapidly changing for many people.  Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that many people’s lives are rapidly changing.

Many who had reason to believe they were financially secure for the rest of their lives have lost their jobs.  Others have lost a large part of their savings in the stock market or because of inflation.

A large number of people today are facing a common problem, the loss of a loved one through death or divorce.

The death may be a sudden one, leaving the survivor in a state of shock and disbelief.  Perhaps a long illness proceeded, yet one is never truly prepared to lose a loved one.

MORE DIVORCES are taking place after many years of marriage than ever before in our history.  Thousands who felt secure in the belief that their marriage was a lasting one have experienced a rude awakening.  They are suddenly faced with a complete change in their life-styles, and many are afraid they will not be able to cope with it.

Fortunately, everyone has an inner strength that enables him to cope with any situation.  Unfortunately, many are not aware that they have it.

LIFE NEVER GIVES US a test that we are not capable of passing !

The first step in tapping this inner strength so desperately needed at a time like this is the realization that it is there.  If you were living in poverty and a million dollars was placed in a bank account for you, they money would be worthless if you didn’t know you had it and then made use of it.

Even then, the realization of your wealth would come slowly.  You would probably find it difficult at first to adjust to the fact that you could have anything you wanted, especially if you had been forced to deny yourself all of your life.

I doubt if you would be able to buy something as expensive as a yacht right away, for instance.  Your intellectual mind would have difficulty in believing that you could actually afford it.  After a period of buying less expensive things your mind would become adjusted to the fact that nothing was beyond your reach.

THE SAME PRINCIPLE applies to the inner strength we all possess.  It’s like money in the bank, but useless if we don’t know it is there and know how to use it.

This inner strength will never fail to comply with any and all demands we put upon it.  If you went to the lake to get some water the lake wouldn’t care if you took a cup or a bucket, it would simply give you as much as you asked.

In a situation where a sudden loss has occurred, a recognition and acceptance of this inner strength is needed immediately.  Important decisions will have to be made.  Many times the person has not had to make decisions for years, because the other person in his life made them.

LEARN TO depend on yourself in life’s situations.  When a sudden or difficult situation arises, let your first thought be, “What shall I do ?” not “Whom shall I ask for advice ?”

You will probably have to start with small things.  Make a decision and don’t deviate from it, no matter how unimportant it may seem.  We make decisions every day without realizing it.  Even if it is a simple one such as deciding to go shopping at a certain time, or making a phone call, make sure you follow through.

In a short time your decision making ability will improve.  Your subconscious mind will know that when you make a decision you mean business and it will see that whatever you decide upon will come to pass.

THIS WAY you are proving to yourself that you are in control of your life.  Always bear in mind that each time you make a decision you gain strength and become better able to make the next one.

There is nothing wrong with seeking help, but try at least one solution of your own before you do.  Even if you are wrong, you will be in a better position to make a more accurate decision the next time

Take the direct approach to every problem.  Never refuse to make a decision, no matter how small or insignificant it might be.  Don’t back away from accepting responsibility or facing personal problems.  Occasionally you will have to decide to do something that is disagreeable.  That is good.  Anyone can take the line of least resistance and do the things he likes to do.

REMEMBER, you have unlimited inner strength which will see you through any situation !  You do not have to rely on your “little self” in times of difficulty.  This inner strength is in everyone.  Don’t hesitate to call on this power.  It is yours to use when needed.  Even Jesus said, “As for myself, I do nothing.  It is the Father within who doeth the works.”

This is the turning point of your life.  Look upon it as a new beginning, as discouraged as you might be at this time.  Perhaps some day you will look back and say, “I am grateful I discovered the strength within me to get through that difficult period of my life.”

It is very important at this time that you practice persistence.  Learn to be thorough.  Keep your mind centered on the thing you are doing.  This will help you keep your mind off yourself and your immediate problems.  Do it now and do it right.

Remember, the mind is the most powerful tool in the world, and it is yours to command.  Don’t under any circumstances let your mind be filled with regrets and resentment about the changes that have taken place.  These resentments are only harming you.  They are using energy that should be applied to your new life.

IF YOU ALLOW these negative emotions to smolder on the inside they will cause you much suffering.  If you cannot train yourself to let go of emotions like hate, envy, jealously, greed, etc. they will attract to you unpleasant conditions, which are the last thing you want at this time.

As difficult as it will be, try to replace them with cheerfulness, thankfulness, and love.

Abraham Lincoln said:  “I have come to the conclusion that a person can be just about as happy as he decides he wants to be.”

Think Well Of Yourself

IT IS AMAZING how many of us have a poor opinion of ourselves.  One of the happiest days of our lives will be the day we learn to accept ourselves as we are.  This doesn’t mean we should stop striving to improve.  It means that we should look upon the person we are at this point in a different light.

There are two sides to our nature.  The worst of us have a better side that we are not expressing.  The best of us have what you might call a lower side to our natures, that we express occasionally.

Those who have a poor opinion of themselves are giving more power and attention to their lower nature than it deserves.  At the same time they are neglecting their finer qualities, and so these qualities fail to develop.

IT IS a matter of training one’s mind.  We should form an ideal picture of ourselves and accept that as real, rather than creating a picture of ourselves that is anything less than ideal.

Everyone’s nature contains many fine qualities.  The only difference is that these qualities are more highly developed in some than in others.

We all have within us the potential to be calm, poised, assured, confident, and powerful.  When we express our lower nature we are nervous, afraid, unsure of ourselves, weak and limited in power.

IT IS WONDERFUL that we can deliberately choose which part of our nature we would like to express.  You will probably agree that the qualities of one’s higher nature are more desirable than those of the lower, but you might ask, “How do I express these ?”

Every thought that is positive, uplifting, and encouraging should be nourished.  Such thinking enables you to use your creative powers for your own good and the good of all concerned.

The lower nature is negative.  If you prefer to live that way, cultivate thoughts of doubt, fear, blame, regrets and irritability.

I REPEAT, you can choose whether you wish to develop qualities of either your higher or lower nature, but it will take a certain amount of discipline if you decide on your higher qualities.

Throughout our lives we have developed habits of thinking.  After a while these thinking patterns become automatic.  So unless we make a definite effort, our thoughts will continue to follow the same pattern.

To make this more understandable, I will repeat briefly from an earlier column what the Yoga masters taught on the subject; they said (long before there were x-rays) that the human brain is like soft clay, and therefore subject to impressions.  As a thought is repeated many times - the impression, or groove, becomes deeper.

ONCE A PERSON establishes habit patterns of thinking it is easy to see why his thoughts would automatically continue to fall in the same grooves.  One would have to put a great amount of extra force behind a thought to direct the thought in a new direction.

Imagine diverting a river from one pat of the country to another before a new channel had been dug, and expecting it to flow smoothly.  That is how difficult it is to channel our habit patterns of thinking in a new direction.

Up to now perhaps we have allowed our thoughts and emotions to rule us rather than our controlling them.  They are ours to control just as much as our hands and feet, but we will have to work at it.

THE BEST WAY to start is to change our opinion of ourselves.  Charity begins at home.  The true meaning of charity is love, so we should love ourselves more.  Not in an egotistical or selfish way, as most people think of self-love, but love your higher nature.  Constantly practice expressing your best qualities at every opportunity.

In order to make a change in your outward life you must first change the way you have been thinking about yourself.  The thoughts you have entertained about yourself in the past have made you what you are.  Wishing for a change will not be enough.  If you are going to make new impressions, or grooves, in your brain you will have to have deep conviction and belief behind your thoughts.

There are channels or grooves in your brain that you now realize you no longer want.  They will level off and disappear only if they are no longer used.

HERE ARE SOME suggestions:  First, see if you can go for 24 hours expressing only thoughts and actions that would pertain to qualities of your higher nature.  You must become consciously aware of your thinking.  Do this 24 hours at a time until your whole pattern of thought is changed.

You can’t believe how happy you will become !

Next, write down on one side of a piece of paper the good qualities you now have.  On the other side write down the qualities you would like to have but feel you lack.  Now, concentrate on the qualities you have for a few minutes and be thankful for them.

Next, concentrate on the qualities you would like to have and imagine yourself in possession of them.  The best time to do this is bedtime, because the subconscious mind never sleeps.  If you persist, you will awake some morning and find that the qualities you have aspired to are yours.

You Are What You Think book 1 – #23: Words Can Create or Destroy

You Are What You Think book 1

Article #23

My life is an Excellent Adventure from using  “You Are What You Think

Words Can Create or Destroy

MOST OF US are not aware of the power of the spoken word.  If we were, we would guard our words as carefully as we should guard our thoughts.

We are discovering that we can control our circumstances by controlling our thinking.  We will also find that the words we speak have an immediate effect on our lives.

Some of you will remember the incident described in an earlier column when the convict said “Good morning” to the guard he hated.  These two words changed his own life and the lives of many others.

WORDS HAVE a vibratory power.  Whatever a person continually voices, he will begin to attract.

A good example is the belief in the aging process.  Ever since we were children we have been told that we can expect certain things to happen, (or stop happening) when we reach a certain age.

Many an athlete has cut short his own career by constantly talking about his getting older.  “I’ve slowed down a step.”  “My legs get tired sooner,” etc.

FROM THE BEGINNING of their careers athletes’ minds have been conditioned to believe that 30 years of age will be the turning point.  They constantly hear other members of the team who are that age or older complaining about slowing down, aching muscles, etc.  By listening to talk along these lines they are attracting the very things they fear.

Some people literally talk and think themselves into physical deterioration and old age.

If the athlete isn’t aware of the workings of the mind he will allow those negative statements to reach his subconscious, where they will remain impatiently waiting to express themselves when he nears 30 himself.

I DON’T THINK it can be emphasized enough that life gives back to us what we expect to receive.

It is pitiful to observe people whose false beliefs in aging have prevented them from doing things they could be doing.  Mind controls every function of your body.  The subconscious accepts all suggestions given it by the conscious mind as a pattern to live by.

It makes little difference whether these suggestions are valid or not.  Our belief in them makes them true to us whether or not they are true !

IF THE CONSCIOUS mind accepts as true that we will automatically slow down or become ill at a certain age, the subconscious mind won’t argue with it !  The body doesn’t have anything to say about its condition, it simply conforms to your beliefs about it.

If you have been in the habit of talking about approaching age with its expected infirmities, you should immediately start substituting positive statements about yourself, no matter how strong the evidence appears to be to the contrary.

Realize that everything is the result of thought initially.  Perhaps you have not realized that the words you speak give power to your thoughts that make an indelible impression on your subconscious mind.

YOU MAY HAVE accepted as true the ideas of others that were detrimental to you.  It has been said that if we don’t govern our own mind someone else will govern it for us.

Gain enough control over your mind until you only think and talk about the things you want to experience in life.  Unless you want to experience the infirmities of old age, don’t think and talk about them !

Gerontologists agree that the mental and physical capacities of old people are underrated.  Senility does not result from physical decline it is a psychological condition brought on by boredom and a feeling of uselessness.

WE OFTEN HEAR about the stresses the young must undergo in a changing world.  Think of the stress the average older person faces:  loss of status, their effect of imagining the body is deteriorating, anxiety at seeing friends ill and dying, emptiness and purposelessness of life, and mainly the loss of hope that conditions could ever improve.

If the person believes the process of chronological aging inevitably results in mental and physical deterioration he will think, “Each year I’ll get worse, I can’t win.”  If he persists in that belief and attitude he will be proven correct, he can’t win.

Most of all of this isn’t necessary.  Most of it can be prevented once we overcome the false beliefs about aging we have been subjected to since we were children.

HISTORY IS FULL of examples which prove the significant creative output does not come from the young.  Authorities claim that over 64% of the great achievements of the world have been made by persons over 40.

A few examples:  Jules Verne was writing his best stories at 70.  George Bernard Shaw won a Nobel Prize when almost 70.  Commodore Vanderbilt did most of his railroad building after 70.  Voltaire did his best work between 60 and 84.  Adenauer was Chancellor of West Germany from 73 to 87.  Julia Ward Howe, author of “Battle Hymn of The Republic,” produced her best writing, “At Sunset,” at 91.

Only two things can hold you back, negative attitudes and failure to try.

You Are What You Think book 1 – #22: Tuning Your Mind Into Success

You Are What You Think book 1

Article #22

My life is an Excellent Adventure from using  “You Are What You Think

Tuning Your Mind Into Success

YOU DO NOT have to rely on will power alone to reach the goals you have set for yourself.  If the desire to succeed is strong enough, a tremendous amount of will power isn’t necessary.

If you have failed repeatedly in your efforts to stop smoking or to lose weight, for example, it is because you are not using your power of thought.  You can attain any goal you set for yourself, but you must learn to control your thoughts first.

The day you decide to overcome habits that are detrimental to you should be the happiest day in your life.  Instead, it is usually one of the most miserable.

IF YOU ARE like most of us, all you think about are the difficulties you are going to experience.  Consequently you start by feeling sorry for yourself.

“How can I go without the desserts I love so much ?”

“How am I going to do without a cigarette with my coffee or cocktail ?”

“Why does this have to happen to me, that I must deprive myself of the things I like so much ?”

SPIRITUAL TEACHERS who understand the workings of the mind and human nature know the methods to help their students attain their goals.  They realize we live in a mental world, and if people have habits they would like to overcome, or character traits they would like to develop, there first must be a strong desire to succeed.

Most of us lack this strong desire, so it must be developed before the program is started.  If the wish to succeed isn’t there, it is unlikely that our efforts will be equal to the task.

Before these teachers instruct their students in the methods to build up the needed desire they know they must first teach them to control, and attain mastery over, their thoughts.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY necessary that you learn to direct your thinking into the channels that you deliberately choose.  It takes practice, as does anything worth attaining.  If you succeed, nothing will be out of your reach.

One method is to compare your mind to your home.  You would not allow undesirable elements to enter your home if you could prevent it.  Why then, allow undesirable thoughts to enter your mind ?  Every time a thought attempts to enter that you feel would be detrimental to you, send it on its way.  If you start to make a negative statement or think an undesirable thought, reverse it immediately !

IN AN EARLIER column I suggested making a game of this with the family.  Every time someone says something negative, “I can’t,”’ “I won’t,” “I don’t like,” etc. have them put a nickel in a jar.  This will be fun, and will make the whole family more aware of the importance of their thoughts.

Remember that you can only think one thought at a time.  Try to have only thoughts that will contribute to your happiness and well being.  Don’t dwell on imperfections, or on things you don’t want.

Gradually you will discover that it is becoming easier to control your thoughts.  When this time arrives you are ready to put this newly-acquired control to work to help you make the desired changes in your life.

NOW, LOOK into your life and see what you are doing that will ultimately be harmful to you.  Let us suppose that you eat too much of the wrong foods, or drink or smoke too much.  (Use any example that suits you)

Say to yourself, not at the moment of enjoyment, but when you are quiet and in a thoughtful mood, “What will be the result if I give way to this ?  Will I gradually become less attractive ?  Will my health deteriorate ?  Will I have less energy ?  Will my life become more dull and unexciting ?

“I will stop what I am doing, because it leads to suffering and unhappiness in the long run.”

By that thought, and not by will power, you begin to control your desires.

BY THOUGHT you mentally picture the disastrous results of the habit, and breed a disgust for it.  You deliberately make up your mind not to yield to a passing pleasure which brings unwanted conditions as a result.

Don’t feel sorry for yourself.  Face each day with joyful anticipation, knowing that each day brings you closer to your goal.

If you can’t seem to generate enough desire to begin, here is what to do:  Let your newly-trained mind dwell constantly on the way you would feel and look if your goal were already an accomplished fact.

IF YOUR GOAL is a weight loss, imagine the joy of looking in the mirror, and seeing an attractive figure.  Actually hear your friends telling you how wonderful you look.  Act it out in your mind, then move and walk as a slender person would.

If you wish to stop smoking, let your mind dwell constantly on the benefits to be derived from not smoking; a fresh tasting mouth, the ability to take a deep breath without coughing, increased energy, etc.

Once started on your program don’t under any circumstances allow your mind to dwell on the things you are giving up.  You are not giving up anything if it has been keeping you from your highest potential.

Instead of being discontented with what you are, make up your mind to be ‘that’ which you want to be.

You Are What You Think book 1 – #21: Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder

You Are What You Think book 1

Article #21

My life is an Excellent Adventure from using  “You Are What You Think

Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder

IT IS OUR PAST thoughts that condition our reception of everything we meet in our everyday lives.

Of two people walking down the street, one will see the dirt on the sidewalk while the other notices the flowers in the gardens.

One person would consider losing his job a tragedy.  Another would think of it as a challenge to a new beginning.

THOSE WHO SEE beauty are bound to have their circumstances improve.  Those who notice only the squalor will find that nothing will change for them until they change their viewpoint.

Sit quietly and think what you want from life.  What do you want to become ?  What do you want to have ?  What traits of character do you feel you lack ?  What is your final goal ?

Try to imagine how you would feel if you were already in possession of these things.  Actually live them and enjoy them in your thoughts.  If you can do this it means they are possible to achieve !  Now you are ready to take steps to make your aspirations come true.

THE FIRST THING you must do is to count the blessings you already have !  Do this literally.  Make a list of them, concentrate on them, and add to the list every day.

There is a “law” that says if you want something better than you have, you must first make the best of what you already do have.

If you believe that in order to be happy you must have a nicer hone, fix up the one you are now living in to the best of your ability.

If you think you are deserving of a better job, do your best in your present job.

WE CAN NOT sit back and do nothing and expect our circumstances to improve.  Improvement will come once we have learned to do the best with what we have.

We expect Life to do better by us, but we don’t do enough with what Life has already given us !

Realize that everything is a matter of degree.  It has been said that the person with no shoes feels sorry for himself until he sees a person with no feet.

IF WE WANT our conditions to improve, there is one requisite that Life demands of us.  It is that we take the first step.

This is another of the great natural laws.  Although it can be found throughout both Eastern and Western scriptures, it has gone virtually unnoticed.  As with many of these truths, they are so simple we feel we have to enlarge upon them, embellish them to make them more complicated, instead of accepting them as originally presented.

This law is that if a person will take the first step in the direction of his “higher self” his “higher self” will take nine toward him.

MANY OTHER WORDS are used to denote the higher self.  God, the Almighty, Guru, the Overself, the Superconscious, etc.  Use whatever word you wish, as long as you realize that there is something within you that is greater than you have expressed until now.  Take a step in that direction !  When we decide to do something positive with our lives, the change is immediate.

A convict named Jack is a goo example of the working of this Law.  He is past middle-age and has been in prison for more that 10 years.  Four months ago he had absolutely no hope.  The only future he could foresee for himself was  gradual deterioration and a death that he would have welcomed.

I told him if he would take just one step in the direction of his self-improvement, he would be amazed at the results.  Although it took a tremendous mental effort, he agreed to enroll in the prison educational program.  This one step automatically put positive forces in motion (as the scriptures promise) that have changed his life completely.

HE HAS HAD magazine articles accepted, is working on the prison newspaper, and has found he has previously undreamed of talents.

Four months ago he was living like a vegetable.

Needless to say, when something dramatic happens in a life, it doesn’t stop with the one life.  Others have been inspired by Jack’s example to do the same.  Many lives will be changed because one man decided to take the first step in the direction of his “higher self.”

NONE OF US is as bad as he might be, or as good as he could be.  You can’t stand still.  You must go in either one direction or the other.  You have the freedom to choose.  If you decide to go in the direction of your own betterment, unexpected help appears almost miraculously.

Many convicts tell me that their greatest regret is that they didn’t realize their potential.  They wasted so many years because they felt they were somehow limited in what they were capable of doing, so they took what they felt was the easy way.

“I am the way the Lord made me, and there is nothing I can do about it.”  That is one of the greatest myths perpetuated upon mankind.

You must take the first step.

YOUR POTENTIAL will become the actual.

You Are What You Think book 1 – #20: To Receive You Must Give

You Are What You Think book 1

Article #20

My life is an Excellent Adventure from using  “You Are What You Think

To Receive You Must Give

THERE IS A LAW that says, “What we are to the world, the world will be to us.”

According to the Law of Attraction, whatever we send forth comes back to us in like form.  A boomerang returns to the thrower.

No one can escape the consequences of disregarding natural laws.  One could disregard the law of gravity.  However, if he stepped off the roof of a building he would fall down.

A NATURAL LAW is not a command, but as with the above example, there is an inevitable result !

Here is something you can prove to yourself:  The amount of happiness you are experiencing at this moment is in direct relationship to the extent of happiness you are dispensing.

Please remember this:  The effect of your conduct towards others, causing them happiness or misery, brings you happiness or misery in return.

THOSE WHO COMPLAIN that Life has little to offer are the ones who do the least giving.  As with the Law of Attraction, what we give we will receive.

We are not speaking about giving money.  There is much you could give other than money.  You can give of yourself !

I often hear young people say, “Life doesn’t seem to have any meaning and I’m bored.”

IF YOU ARE one of these, ask yourself how much you are giving to Life.

The person who says he or she isn’t loved and is lonely isn’t giving love.  The person who doesn’t have friends isn’t being a friend.

If you would like to see some dramatic changes in your life, give friendship and understanding to one who doesn’t understand you.  (In fact, the results will be even more dramatic if it is someone you have actually disliked.)

IF YOU ARE bored, try offering your services to a person or group without thought of remuneration.  Share your talents and abilities with someone.

There are volunteer groups which visit convalescent homes, for instance.  Many of the elderly there have not had a visitor for years.  You could read to them, or perhaps write letters for them.  If nothing else, you could talk to them.

There is a lonely child somewhere who needs a friend.  The example you could set and the advice you could give might change a life !

DON’T BE AFRAID or reluctant to give.  Whatever you give will always be replaced.  Did you ever hear of anyone who gave so much love that his supply ran out and he didn’t have any more to give ?  The more love one gives the more he has to give !

You don’t always have to be paid in money for what you do.  Believe it or not, the satisfaction you will gain by helping someone will be far greater than money.

Giving expands the giver.  You become a bigger person when you give unselfishly.  Your potential is raised because you are showing Life that you are not afraid.  You have confidence because you know there is an unending supply, and that the more you give of yourself the more you will have of yourself to give !

YOUR ABILITIES and talents will grow only to the extent you use them.  If you don’t use what you have, you can’t expect to develop more.  In fact, they will atrophy from lack of use.

As you know, I have worked with convicts for many years, am familiar with conditions inside prisons.  As bad as these conditions may be, I have actually seen people on the outside who are even more imprisoned.

They are in prisons they have made for themselves.  They have built them with their own self-centeredness, and they are more miserable than the inmates in the prisons made of steel.

THERE ARE those who are so absorbed in their “little selves” that they are afraid to give.  They are the ones who complain that Life has nothing to offer, yet withhold everything they have received from Life.  “Why should I do anything for you, you don’t do anything for me ?”

Are you dissatisfied with the world you live in  ?  If so you will want to change it.  Fine, but don’t try to change the whole world.

Start with the person who is “next” to you.  If you try to change the world by helping your neighbor, you neighbor may be encouraged to help his neighbor by following your example.  Thus, the whole world will be bettered.

ARE YOU into drugs or alcohol ?  If you like to get a “high” try the above suggestions for a while instead.  These are ways to get a permanent high, not a temporary one, and it is much more intense and beneficial !

Give of yourself to Life.  Life will return to you much more than you give.

You Are What You Think book 1 – #19: Keep Your Channels Open

You Are What You Think book 1

Article #19

My life is an Excellent Adventure from using  “You Are What You Think

Keep Your Channels Open

MANY TIMES I have heard people say, “Good things never seem to happen to me.”

Everyone has channels for good to flow through, but what good is a channel if it becomes clogged ?  Often it is our resentments, and inability to forgive, that do the clogging and block the flow.

The person who is full of resentment is blocking the flow of any good that might come to him or her.  It is like putting a tourniquet around your arm to stop the flow of blood.

WE RESENT the way people around us are acting.  We become resentful of the annoyances that are continually upsetting us.

Please think about the following the next time you are upset and unhappy;

Are you really upset because of what happened ?  Isn’t it more truthful to say that you are upset because it didn’t coincide with what YOU wanted to happen ?

ARE YOU UPSET because of the way someone acted ?  Are you sure it isn’t because the person didn’t act the way YOU thought he or she should have acted ?

It is our preconceived ideas of what we think should happen that cause resentment.  Who are we to put our ideas upon others ?  It we could eliminate these preconceived ideas we would rid ourselves of much of our unhappiness.

Each time we perform an act we automatically expect certain things to happen as a result.  This way we expose ourselves to becoming unhappy and upset, which leads to resentment.

AS AN EXAMPLE, we do a favor for someone.  If the person doesn’t thank us, we resent it.  Or we do what we believe to be an extra good job, but it goes unnoticed.

If we could only do as suggested by the ancient sages in a previous column;  Do whatever we do for the joy of doing it without concern for praise or blame.  Then our happiness wouldn’t be dependent upon the reactions of others !

Why do we lay ourselves open to being disappointed ?

IF WE ARE RESENTFUL of our environment or our circumstances, nothing is likely to change.

This is one point I constantly drive home to the convicts I meet with at Folsom Prison.  A prison is full of hatred and resentment.  However, the moment the convict is able to rid himself of feelings of hatred and resentment, he becomes out of place in that environment, and is soon released.  Up to this point, about 98 per cent of the ones I have known have stayed out.

This is probably because they have discovered that their feelings of well being and peace of mind are not dependent on anything or anyone outside themselves.

THE MOMENT they get even an inkling of the control they have over their lives they gain an inner confidence.

They no longer feel resentment because they realize there is really nothing to resent !

Perhaps you have been resenting your surroundings and even some of those persons close to you.  You would like some changes buy don’t know how to go about it.

THE CHANGE MUST COME from within yourself !  Change your own attitude and everything else will follow.  It will happen so fast it will seem like a miracle !

If things have not been going well for you, make sure there is not someone whom you have yet to forgive.  Search yourself and see if you are holding a grudge, (it may be camouflaged in some self-righteous way) against some individual, or some movement of which you disapprove.

It could be you are still resentful of something that happened to you as a child.  Or some real, or imagined wrong that happened long ago.

IF ANY OF THIS is true, you have an act of forgiveness to perform.  If you can’t forgive, don’t expect things to improve for you.

When you set others free by forgiving you are setting yourself free also.  Did you ever think of resentment as being a form of attachment ?

It takes two to make a prisoner; the prisoner and the jailer.  You couldn’t be a prisoner unless someone else were involved.

ACCORDING TO the mystics, when you hold resentment against anyone, you are bound to that person by a cosmic link.  Although it is a mental chain, it is real.

You are attaching yourself to the one person in the world you probably dislike the most !  Surely that is not what you want.  Always remember you belong to that with which you are linked in thought.

You must cut all such ties by an act of forgiveness.  Through forgiveness you become free of all resentments, and set yourself free.
